Bringing comfort to NICU families and infants

Newborn care at Holy Cross Health is designed to meet each baby’s needs. Most babies are born without serious complications or medical issues and are cared for in a neonatal nursery, staffed by health care professionals who are experts in the care of infants. When more intensive care and support are needed, Holy Cross Health offers sophisticated and specialized treatment in the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Holy Cross Hospital and in Holy Cross Germantown Hospital's Neonatal Unit.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Holy Cross Hospital

Newborns with complicated medical issues can be cared for in the newborn ICU at Holy Cross Hospital located in Silver Spring, Md. The 46-bed unit is a Level III NICU, which means it offers a very high degree of complex, quality care and access to a wide range of pediatric specialists for critically ill newborns.

The NICU features state-of-the-art technology to treat babies who are born early or have medical complications that require constant observation or specialized care. The 46-bed unit is the largest Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Maryland, and cares for more critically ill newborns than any other NICU in the state.

Neonatal Unit at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital

Holy Cross Germantown Hospital's Level II Neonatal Unit is a special care nursery for babies born without complex medical problems, but who need initial help for breathing problems. If a newborn requires more intensive care after the first 24 hours following birth, he or she will be transferred to the Holy Cross Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Silver Spring, or to another facility. Like all patient rooms at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, the Neonatal Unit features all private rooms for babies and their visiting family.

Expert Neonatal Care

Babies in Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital's neonatal units are cared for by a dedicated team of neonatologists (physicians who specialize in caring for critically ill newborns), registered nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, social workers, case managers, and lactation consultants.

Our team also works closely with parents and their pediatricians to coordinate care.

Because there is no substitute for a parent's loving touch, parents are encouraged to visit their newborns frequently and participate in their care. We also support and encourage breastfeeding and can help mothers learn how to get started.

NICVIEW

When parents are away from their babies in the NICU at Holy Cross Hospital, our NICVIEW system can help bring comfort to NICU families and their infants. Thanks in part to a $10,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to the Holy Cross Health Foundation, Holy Cross Hospital purchased 12 NICVIEW cameras that provide a secure video stream over the internet from any web-enabled device.

Once infants are ready to go home, we help ease the transition. We offer a special discharge class, CPR training, and a caregiver support group. For families interested in spiritual support, chaplains are available to patients and families of all faiths and beliefs.
