Our Treatment Services

You want the latest and most effective treatments available if you or a loved one receives a cancer diagnosis. Holy Cross Health offers leading-edge care at a time when you most need expertise.

We offer a range of advanced treatment options for all cancers, specializing in breast, gynecological, and lung cancer. Our services include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and radiofrequency ablation.

Our services are available on both an outpatient and inpatient basis through our dedicated treatment centers including the Inpatient Oncology Unit at Holy Cross Hospital, Outpatient Infusion Center, Radiation Treatment Center, and Breast Center.

Surgery

Surgery may be the best option for some cancer patients, preventing the spread of cancer cells by removing lumps, polyps, tumors or lesions. After surgery, radiation or chemotherapy may still be needed to destroy any remaining cancer cells.

Holy Cross Health's experienced surgeons are part of our team approach to cancer care. They work with your physician, oncologists and other members of the care team to assess your surgical needs.

Our surgeons perform a high volume of cancer surgeries — including more gynecological cancer surgeries than anyone else in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Many are experts in minimally invasive surgery. And, research shows better patient outcomes are linked to advanced training and the skill level of your cancer surgeon.

If you require hospitalization, your environment is designed to help recovery with private rooms, comfortable furniture and every convenience, including a place for overnight guests.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy – aimed at areas of cancer – can destroy or slow the growth of cancer cells that grow and divide more quickly than regular cells. More than half of all cancer patients will require radiation therapy at some point in their treatment.

The Holy Cross Radiation Treatment Center provides advanced radiation oncology therapies, including the most innovative new treatments. The Center’s experienced clinicians – including board-certified radiation oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists and radiation therapists – will work with your physician to coordinate your care.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses specific anti-cancer drugs to kill cancer cells. It can be given alone, in combination with radiation therapy, or as a follow-up to surgery. Patients may receive chemotherapy on an inpatient or outpatient basis, depending on what your physician prescribes. Medications are available to help reduce or manage any side effects.

If you need outpatient chemotherapy treatment, the Holy Cross Outpatient Infusion Center offers a safe, comfortable environment and is open Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Radiofrequency Ablation

Holy Cross Health is a local leader in adopting new treatments, including those usually seen only at academic centers. This includes radiofrequency ablation, a high-tech process that destroys certain inoperable metastatic and benign tumors. Holy Cross is expanding its use to select liver, kidney, lung and bone tumors.

Pain Management

Pain management is a high priority of our cancer treatment programs. One highly effective method is patient controlled analgesia (PCA). PCA allows a patient to self-administer medication, which is delivered through an IV from a small, computerized pump.

It ensures continuous and regulated pain relief, with the safety of special lockout devices to prevent accidental overdose of self-administrated pain medicine. Learn about Holy Cross Health's Pain Management Center.
