New Classes Opens in Gaithersburg on September 20

Gaithersburg, MD, August 25 – Holy Cross Hospital and Asbury Methodist Village, a Gaithersburg Md.-based continuing care retirement community, are pleased to announce the opening of a new Senior Fit class in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Senior Fit is a 45-minute exercise class designed for adults age 55 and older to improve strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health. The ongoing class, offered free of charge, will be held at Asbury Methodist Village from 5:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays starting September 20.

Participants do not have to be residents of Asbury Methodist Village, and parking on the campus is free. Holy Cross Hospital and Asbury Methodist Village are dedicated to helping seniors live well. This new partnership brings the strength of the award-winning Senior Fit program to Asbury Methodist Village’s beautiful and convenient location near Lake Forest Mall. The late afternoon timeslot will allow participants who are still working to have access to a free community-based class.

The first class on September 20 will be held in conjunction with activities planned at Asbury Methodist Village for Healthy Aging Month.

“What better way to celebrate the health and wellness of seniors than offering an ongoing exercise program specifically tailored for this age group?” said David Denton, executive director of Asbury Methodist Village.

In addition to Senior Fit, Asbury Methodist Village offers more than 30 other fitness classes including Water Walking, Aqua Balance, Tai Chi, Better Balance, Social Dancing, Tubes and Bands Strength Training and Circuit Weights. Exercise class cards may be purchased for $35 for six classes to allow participants to choose freely from the array of class formats.

The Holy Cross Senior Fit program offers classes at 20 sites throughout Montgomery County, Prince George’s County and the District of Columbia. Partners include Kaiser-Permanente Mid-Atlantic States, the Montgomery County Department of Recreation, the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, local churches, and now Asbury Methodist Village. “Senior Fit is an effective exercise program that promotes independence and socialization through physical fitness.

We are able to offer this program at no cost to participants through the relationships we have built with our community partners and are delighted to add Asbury Methodist Village to the list. We look forward to this new partnership as a great opportunity to collaboratively increase outreach to seniors who live up-county by providing accessible and affordable classes to improve health and wellness or cope with a chronic illness,”said Wendy Friar, vice president of Community Health at Holy Cross Hospital. Sixty Senior Fit classes are held each week serving 700 seniors a day Monday through Friday. The newest class at Asbury Methodist Village is the result of multiple requests for a Gaithersburg location and the natural alignment of the hospital’s goals with those of Asbury Methodist Village to bring the best services to seniors in the area.
