Robotic-Assisted Surgery

Robotic Surgery

The Region's Experts in Robotic-Assisted Procedures

With two locations to treat you, Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring and Holy Cross Hospital in Germantown, we are one of the region’s leaders in robotic-assisted surgery with over 30 robotically-trained surgeons across a wide-range of surgical specialties. Our leadership made us the first health system in Montgomery County to acquire the da Vinci Xi Surgical System. Our robotically-trained surgeons have been recognized nationally and internationally for their work, and have presented their surgical successes at national and international conferences.  Our surgeons also train the future generations of surgeons by serving as mentors and proctors for surgeons learning how to use these advanced surgical techniques.  Our commitment to the most advanced surgical techniques and technologies has made Holy Cross Health a regional hub for robotic-assisted surgery.

How Does Robotic-Assisted Surgery Work?

When using the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, surgeons are seated at a console where they can view highly magnified 3D images of the surgical area. Through this magnification and enhanced 3D visualization, surgeons are in complete control of the surgical procedure, maneuvering the robotic arms using tiny instruments that provide a range of motion greater than the human hand for superior surgical precision.  These tiny instruments allow for smaller incisions, which have numerous benefits to the patient.

Our orthopedic surgeons utilize the new Zimmer Biomet ROSA® Knee System for robot-assisted total knee replacements. The ROSA Knee System creates 3D replications of a patient’s knee using a camera and optical trackers. Surgeons use these blueprints and real-time, system-generated feedback to create a surgery plan that is unique to the patient’s anatomy and allows for greater precision and flexibility in total knee replacements.

Benefits of Robotic-Assisted Surgery

All robotic-assisted surgeries are minimally invasive, meaning the incisions to the skin are small.  This provides many benefits to the patients, including:

  • Less pain
  • Reduced risk of infections, such as excessive bleeding and other complications
  • Minimal scaring and an improved cosmetic result
  • Quicker recovery, which can result in a shorter hospital stay
    • Holy Cross Health’s length of stay is lower than the national average for robotic-assisted surgeries for certain specialties/procedures
  • Increased patient satisfaction
