Holy Cross Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Maryland. Founded 50 years ago in 1963 by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, today Holy Cross Hospital is a 442-bed, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit teaching hospital caring for more than 196,000 patients each year. Located in Silver Spring, just north of Washington, D.C., and near the Capital Beltway and Metro transportation system, Holy Cross Hospital primarily serves residents of the state’s two largest jurisdictions, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.
The hospital offers a full range of inpatient, outpatient and community-based health care services, with specialized expertise in women and infant services, senior services, surgery, neuroscience and cancer. Specialists at the hospital perform more inpatient gynecologic surgeries, deliver more babies and care for more newborns with complex medical issues than any other hospital in Maryland. The hospital addresses the unique needs of seniors through the nation’s first Seniors Emergency Center – which has become a national model – as well as a Seniors Surgery Center, a full range of specialized surgical and inpatient services, healthy-aging programs and support services for caregivers.
As a not-for-profit provider, Holy Cross Hospital has a history of reinvesting its earnings into innovative and sustainable community benefit programs to improve the health of all those served, with particular emphasis on underserved and vulnerable community members. During the last five fiscal years, Holy Cross Hospital has provided more than $177 million in community benefit, including more than $81 million in financial assistance. In 2010, the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission named Holy Cross Hospital one of only five exemplary community benefit programs in the state. In 2012, Holy Cross Hospital was one of only four hospitals to be awarded a perfect score for its community benefit program.
With 1,200 affiliated physicians, Holy Cross Hospital’s medical staff is one of the largest in the state. The hospital employs more than 3,200 people, including 1,000 nurses. It is the only hospital in Maryland to receive the Workplace Excellence Award from the Alliance for Workplace Excellence every year since 1999.
Holy Cross Hospital is a member of Trinity Health of Novi, Mich., one of the largest health systems in the country, the American Hospital Association, the Maryland Hospital Association, the Catholic Health Association and the Association of American Medical College’s Council of Teaching Hospitals.
