Extensive pelvic adhesions form during the normal healing process after damage to tissues in the lining of the abdomen and pelvis. As our bodies try to repair an injury, some structures in the pelvis may become unintentionally "stuck" to other tissue.
Adhesions can occur anywhere within the pelvic cavity. Extensive labial adhesion occurs outside the pelvis on the labia—the folds of the vulva (the outer genitals in women). Adhesions can be caused by infections, inflammation or previous surgeries.
Extensive adhesions in the pelvis can cause complications such as pain, infertility and bowel obstructions. At Holy Cross Health, our gynecologic surgeons are treating adhesions using minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to remove the tissue, which relieves pelvic pain and may help with fertility.
