Holy Cross Health's commitment to meeting community need and to improving the health of all those served, with particular emphasis on the underserved and vulnerable, is brought to life through the health system's community benefit ministry.
2013 Community Benefit Report
Community benefit efforts include all of the services provided to community members at no cost or subsidized as part of the hospital's mission to be the most trusted provider of health care services in the area.
We take seriously our responsibility to invest in our community benefit efforts and are a leader in community benefit in Montgomery County. In the past five fiscal years, Holy Cross Health has provided more than $202 million in community benefit, including more than $98 million in financial assistance, according to community benefit reporting guidelines established by the State of Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission.
Our efforts focus on improving health care access. Our proven approach is to systematically identify significant health care needs in our evolving community that are not adequately met because of financial, geographic, racial or cultural barriers. Then we propose and develop innovative solutions to address these needs in ways that can be sustained in the future.
One of our strengths is our ability to collaborate with other organizations to maximize our collective positive impact. We continuously bring together resources toward shared goals by partnering with local, state and federal government agencies; associations; community-based social service organizations; faith communities; charities and others.
Our activities focus on positively impacting the health of our community with programs tailored to the unique needs of women, infants and seniors, and racial, ethnic and linguistic minorities.
Many community benefit programs are unique in the community and would not otherwise be available. These programs meet important community needs and are not expected to generate a positive financial return.

Community Health Needs Assessment
In 2011, Holy Cross Health identified unmet community health needs by conducting a community health needs assessment in collaboration with the Montgomery County Healthy Montgomery Community Health Improvement Process. In 2012, the Needs Assessment was amended to include priorities established by the Healthy Montgomery Steering Committee. View more information.
Multi-Year Community Benefit Implementation Plan
Holy Cross Health's board of trustees approves an annual community benefit plan and the Mission and Strategy Committee of the board provides quarterly oversight. Learn more.
