Understanding Chronic Wounds

A chronic wound occurs when the normal wound healing process is disrupted. Some of the factors that contribute to a chronic wound include underlying diseases, repeated trauma, infection or poor nutrition.

The majority of chronic wounds typically fall into three categories:

  • Venous ulcers
  • Diabetic ulcers
  • Pressure ulcers

Each type of wound has its own causes and treatments. Chronic wounds that are unrecognized or untreated can result in serious health complications.
