Therapy Services
Holy Cross Sports and Orthopaedic Therapy Services (HC/SPORTS)
offers comprehensive physical rehabilitation programs to restore
movement, repair injury, and treat a wide range of medical conditions,
including painful menstruation and incontinence. We provide leading
edge physical therapy and sports medicine treatments, using the
most modern exercise testing equipment.
Treatment methods include muscle energy, craniosacral therapy,
myofascial release and other forms of osteopathic type manipulation,
as well as rehabilitative conditioning. These techniques are used
to improve the adaptability of the musculoskeletal system, reduce
pain, restore movement and decrease joint stress.
Using a comprehensive program designed to meet your needs, our
physical therapists can help you regain mobility and reduce pain.
Physical Therapy for Women’s Health
At Holy Cross, physical therapy offerings include programs for
the unique muscular issues many women face throughout their lives.
There are some health conditions that can be better managed or
even resolved simply through proper strengthening and exercise.
Some of the common women’s health
conditions that we treat include:
Dysmenorrhea (Painful Menstruation)
- For many women the menstruation process is uncomfortable to extremely
painful. Sometimes this pain can be so severe that it prevents
women from participating in everyday activities. Holy Cross physical
therapists help women alleviate their discomfort through individualized
programs, sometimes including exercise and transcutaneous electrical
nerve stimulation.
Physical Therapy & Pregnancy
- Obstetrical physical therapy focuses on many of the aches and
pains women experience during and after pregnancy. Tingling
in the arms and legs, back pain and difficulty holding urine
are common problems that can be relieved or eliminated through
physical therapy.
- Holy Cross Hospital provides a comprehensive Maternity Services
- combining preparation classes, highly skilled maternity health care
personnel and a state-of-the-art childbirth facility.
Incontinence/Pelvic Weakness
- It is not uncommon for women, particularly
as they age, to experience incontinence or difficulty in controlling
their bladder. Sometimes these weaknesses are associated with
other landmarks in a woman’s
life, such as childbirth, menopause or surgery (abdominal surgery
or a hysterectomy). Frequently a weakening of a woman’s
pelvic floor muscles results in poor support of the bladder,
uterus and rectum.
- An uncomfortable, awkward health issue, incontinence can be
treated. With adequate exercise and muscle re-education, many
women find that incontinence can be easily controlled or corrected.
Chronic Pelvic Pain
- Chronic back pain and/or discomfort in the pelvis, abdomen and
lower extremities plagues much of the general public. Physical
therapists can often modify these types of symptoms after a thorough
exam by prescribing exercises designed to change your posture,
strength, and mobility. Physical therapy modalities, such as electrical
stimulation and ultrasound, can also help decrease pain and inflammation.
