Stroke patients at Holy Cross Hospital receive the best possible care from a coordinated stroke team of professional physicians, nurses, and support staff.
Coordinated stroke care is important for improved care and consistent communication with family members. “Without an organized stroke program, families are often left in the dark,” says Andrew Barbash, M.D., Medical Director of the Stroke Care Management Program at Holy Cross Hospital. “Because the stroke program at Holy Cross Hospital has been so thoroughly organized, our staff can spend a lot of time educating patients and their families.”
Coordinating the care for stroke patients is Sharon Harriston, R.N. M.S. C.R.N.P., C.C.N.S., cardiovascular nurse practitioner of the stroke program. “A stroke patient may encounter more than eight specialists while in the hospital,” says Harriston. “I help to coordinate patient management through all of these different areas, which include radiology, cardiology, neurology, occupational and speech therapy, and possibly more.”
Vital to this expert care are the hospitalists—doctors who specialize in internal medicine and manage the care patients receive. Our hospitalists are based right here at Holy Cross Hospital and are on call 24 hours a day. “The stroke program is aligned with the hospitalists, who are central to the program because they offer a great opportunity for consistency of care and processes,” explains Harriston.
