Functional decline of the hospitalized elderly often leads to an increased length of stay and need for rehabilitation. Prolonged bed rest is a controllable precipitating factor to functional decline. In response to this, Holy Cross Hospital created a unique program to get elderly patients out of bed as early and as often as possible.
The Progressive Activity Program utilizes the clinical nurse’s assessment skills to determine the patient’s appropriate level of activity, and specially trained mobility technicians to assist our elderly patients in getting out of bed. The mobility technician will encourage and assist our older patients with a variety of activities, as determined by the nurse. Such activities may include: transferring from the bed to a chair; assistance to the bathroom; and walking in the hallway.
The program benefits go far beyond combating functional decline. Supporting the same values as the nursing Quality-Caring Model ©, the MTs provide holistic aspects of care such as hand holding, compassionate listening, and socialization; all of which ward off potential depression and delirium.
