Three Basic Types of Pain

Acute Pain
This is pain of recent onset due to a specific condition other than cancer, such as fractured ribs or an acute shingles attack. Pain from recent trauma or surgically induced. Pain of is of a short, limited duration, which goes away with the healing process.

Chronic, Nonmalignant Pain
Pain that continues for longer periods of time, sometimes even after the healing of the original injury or trauma. Treatments for chronic pain and acute pain are often very different.

Chronic, Malignant Pain
Pain caused by a cancer condition or the treatment of cancer.
