Outpatient Care
Dialysis Center

Holy Cross Hospital’s dialysis services consists of four departments, chronic outpatient hemodialysis, acute hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and the Holy Cross Dialysis Chronic Hemodialysis Center at Woodmore. Its mission is to provide dialytic therapy to patients with acute renal failure or end stage renal disease (ESRD).

The Holy Cross Hospital Chronic Outpatient Hemodialysis unit consists of 14 patient stations, with a patient capacity of 84 patients, that provides more than 12,000 treatments annually. The unit is open Monday through Saturday from 7 am-10 pm.

The acute hemodialysis unit consists of four patient stations in the dialysis unit. Equipment is available for staff to dialyze patients throughout the facility, such as intensive care units and medical surgical floors. The acute unit provides an average of 225 to 250 treatments per month.

The peritoneal dialysis unit trains patients in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) and offers follow-up for patients utilizing these therapies. Currently there are more than 40 patients in the program, making it one of the top 10 in the state.

The Chronic Outpatient Hemodialysis Center at Woodmore in Mitchellville, Maryland opened in June 2003. The unit currently operates on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and will eventually be open six days a week. The unit consists of 15 outpatient hemodialysis stations, with a patient capacity of 90 patients. Kaiser and Holy Cross Hospital are working closely together to provide care for their ESRD patients at this facility.

Over the last several years, the dialysis department has continued to grow. We continue to have a waiting list of patients from other centers who wish to be dialyzed at Holy Cross Hospital. Patients come here from out of state to visit friends and family, and utilize our services on a transient basis. Many of these now return to our facility year after year. Our outcomes for adequacy and anemia have consistently demonstrated quality care. The unit continually strives to improve its quality indicators so that patients outcomes are successful.

The success of the dialysis program at Holy Cross is a direct reflection of our staff. We have been fortunate to have a highly trained, and truly dedicated staff. Some staff has been here more than 20 years and many have been here between 5-10 years.

The dialysis unit staff consists of a multidisciplinary team of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, patient care technicians, social workers, dietitians, and unit secretaries. The staff work together ensuring that the patients receive the best care possible. What makes this dialysis unit so special to patients is the people. Patients want to come here for their dialytic needs because they feel our well-trained, compassionate, and caring staff will take them care of. The staff truly embodies the mission of the hospital.
