What is Epilepsy?
More than 3 million people in the U.S.
have some form of epilepsy—a disorder in which abnormal bursts
of electrical activity in the brain trigger seizures. When a person has
two or more seizures, they are considered to have epilepsy.
Epilepsy is not usually life threatening, but if seizures
are not controlled over time, they could lead to long-term problems
with memory and cognition. When people experience seizures, they are
not able to feel pain or perceive danger. They are unable to protect themselves
from falling, and they risk breaking bones or experiencing other injuries.
