Prevention & Early Detection: Lung Cancer

Study Title:
International Early Lung Cancer Action Project

Study Title:
I-ELCAP-Legacy Lung Screening and Smoking Cessation Project

What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to determine whether a CT scan can detect lung cancer or other diseases in the early stages. A CT scan can detect tiny spots on your lungs many years before the spots can be seen on a chest x-ray. Early detection is our best hope for effective treatment and possible cure for lung cancer.

The Legacy Study also examines the impact of providing smoking cessation advice and counseling practices on smoking behavior and smoking related health beliefs in smokers seeking lung cancer screening

Am I a candidate for this study?
To be a candidate for this study:

  • You must be at least 50 years old.
  • You must have you smoked the equivalent of one pack per day for 10 years.
  • If you are a current smoker, would you consider quitting?
  • You must be physically fit enough to have lung surgery if necessary.
  • You must have a primary care physician.

What do I need to do?

  • You will need to complete a detailed questionnaire.
  • You will undergo a free low-dose CT (CAT, Computed tomography) scan of the chest to see if you have any abnormalities in your chest.
  • If no abnormalities exist, you will be scheduled for another free CT scan one year after your first scan.

  • If you are a current smoker, you may be randomized to receive brief smoking cessation counseling session prior to your first CT Scan.
