Cancer Care: Prevention,
Screening and Diagnostic Services
Diagnostic Imaging
The first step of cancer care is an early and accurate diagnosis.
Holy Cross offers a full range of sophisticated evaluation and
diagnostic treatments to detect cancer in any part of the body,
including:
- Diagnostic Mammography—an
X-ray of the breast used to diagnose unusual breast changes,
such as a lump, pain, nipple thickening or discharge, or a change
in breast size or shape. A diagnostic mammogram is also used
to evaluate abnormalities detected on a screening mammogram.
- Mammotome©—a
new biopsy technique that is faster, more accurate, and less
invasive than the traditional breast biopsy.
- Computerized tomography
(CT)—a technique that uses X-rays
and computer technology to make cross-sectional images of body
tissues.
- Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI)—an imaging method that uses
electromagnetic fields and computer-generated graphics to create
cross-sectional images of body tissues.
- Positron-Emission
Tomography (PET)—a nuclear medicine technique
that uses radioactively tagged substances to map the metabolic
activity of tissues.
- Molecular Coincidence
Detection (MCD)—a new diagnostic technique
that improves on the accuracy of conventional PET scans and
allows earlier and more accurate diagnosis of the metabolic activity
of cancer tumors.
- Ultrasound—a
technique that uses high frequency sound waves and computerized
imaging to detect abnormalities in internal body structures.
- Endoscopy—a
flexible fiber-optic tube technology that allows doctors to see
inside the throat, stomach, and intestines.
