| A patient advocate provides comfort, caring and communication for patients and their families in the Emergency Center. A significant role of the patient advocate is to aid with physical comfort: offering a warm blanket to a patient, bringing coffee to a family member, bringing a chair to the bedside or offering a box lunch to a hungry patient.
Another equally important role is to offer "reassuring" comfort; holding the hand of an anxious patient who is alone, offering a hug to a frightened new mother with a sick newborn or sharing stories with an elderly patient waiting for test results.
Patient advocates also provide an additional layer of communication between patients, families and staff-helping with the vital task of keeping patients informed about their care.
