Prevention and Wellness
The Cancer Institute begins with prevention and wellness, promoting healthy lifestyle decisions through education, advice and cancer screening services. Common cancer risk factors include diet and weight, smoking, activity level and family history. Holy Cross Hospital offers classes and services to help you meet healthy lifestyle goals.
Besides a healthy lifestyle, knowing your cancer risk can be helpful. Holy Cross Hospital offers online health risk assessment tools for many conditions, including cancer, and genetic testing and counseling to discuss family history and related issues.
Screening and Early Detection
Early detection through cancer screening services helps improve health outcomes. We offer an array of high-tech diagnostic services to discover cancer early and guide effective treatment. Holy Cross Hospital also makes sure screening services are available to everyone who needs them – regardless of income or insurance coverage – through our community outreach programs.
A Team Approach
If you receive a cancer diagnosis, the Holy Cross Hospital Cancer Institute will assemble a team of cancer specialists just for you, based on your individual care needs. The team – headed by your doctor – coordinates your care within a multidisciplinary group of medical professionals who work together to plan and implement your treatment. We also provide access to clinical trials and research that use new approaches to detection or treatment of cancer not yet widely available.
Your cancer care team may include cancer specialists who are board-certified in radiology, hematology, oncology, surgery, nephrology, internal medicine, neurology and gastroenterology. Cancer nurses, social workers, nutritionists, and others may also be part of your team, based on your individual needs and preferences.
Patient and Family Support Resources
The Holy Cross Hospital Cancer Institute also cares about your emotional, psychological and spiritual needs and offers a full range of patient support services for you and your family – including children. From pain management to counseling to homecare services, we provide support to help you move from treatment to survivorship.
Our dedicated Breast Center offers additional specialized services for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Nurse navigators serve as a personal guide and advocate through the entire process from diagnosis to recovery. They help you understand test results, explain what the doctors are doing and why, making the experience easier at a time when you most need help. The Holy Cross Hospital breast cancer specialists also meet every two weeks to discuss and collaborate on each case. An award-winning virtual technology process allows physicians to participate no matter where they are.
