Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Bringing comfort to NICU families and infants

If your baby should require neonatal care, we're ready. Holy Cross Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) cares for more newborns with complex medical issues than any other hospital in Maryland. Our 46-bed level IIIB NICU features state-of-the-art technology to care for babies who are born early or have medical complications that require constant observation or care.

Our highly specialized team works collaboratively to provide comprehensive infant care. Our team includes neonatologists (physicians who specialize in newborn care), neonatal nurse practitioners, registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, social workers, case managers, lactation consultants and other specialists. Our team communicates with you and your pediatrician to coordinate care and to make sure your baby has everything he or she needs to thrive.

Because there is no substitute for a parent's loving touch, we encourage parents to visit their babies in the NICU frequently and participate in their care. We support and encourage breastfeeding and can help you begin.

When parents are away from their babies, our NICVIEW system can help bring comfort to NICU families and their infants. Thanks in part to a $10,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to the Holy Cross Health Foundation, the hospital purchased 12 NICVIEW cameras that provide a secure video stream over the internet from any web-enabled device.

Once infants are ready to go home, we help ease the transition.  We offer a discharge class, CPR training and a support group.
