Highlights of the New Hospital

Holy Cross Hospital's 93-bed, private-room hospital will bring much-needed health care services to the most rapidly growing and aging region of the county and help train nurses and health care workers. Here are highlights of our plan.

The new hospital will have 93 beds.

  • 237,000 square feet
  • 75 medical/surgical, 12 obstetrics, 6 psychiatric beds
  • 5 operating rooms
  • 12 emergency beds
  • 5 labor/delivery/recovery rooms
  • $202 million total project cost

The hospital will serve the health care needs of the growing and aging population in upper Montgomery County.

  • Today the Germantown/Gaithersburg area has approximately a quarter million people and no hospital.
  • Montgomery County is projected to add 175,000 more people over the next twenty years, 70% of them will be over age 65.
  • The use rate for inpatient hospital days for people age 65+ is six times greater than for the population under age 65.
  • The growth rate of seniors in the upcounty area is even greater than Montgomery County as a whole.
  • The Germantown/Gaithersburg area senior population is projected to grow 5.3% per year compared to 3.6% per year for the county as a whole.

Germantown is an ideal location.

  • The area surrounding the hospital includes the most densely populated upcounty ZIP codes - 70% more densely populated than the county as a whole.
  • The area will continue to grow. The Montgomery County Planning Department projects that in 2040, Germantown will have 98,000 residents and Germantown and Gaithersburg together will have 300,000.

The new hospital will provide nearly 6,000 jobs.

  • The proposed project has significant economic impact, both directly and through its multiplier effect.
  • The construction project alone will lead to the creation of 1,100 Maryland jobs.
  • Ongoing hospital operations will create more than 1,500 jobs.
  • The combined effect of hospital operations, an expanded nursing program, and a fully developed Science and Technology Park could create more than 5,700 jobs.

The new hospital will advance economic development while promoting environmental sustainability.

  • By moving closer to the thousands of upcounty residents who currently use Holy Cross Hospital, travel times and traffic congestion are reduced for people who would otherwise travel to Silver Spring for care.
  • The hospital is being designed to achieve LEED Silver certification for sustainable design and energy efficiency.

The unique partnership with Montgomery College will train more nurses and health care workers.

  • The Germantown hospital will be the first in the nation on a community college campus with an educational partnership.
  • Holy Cross and Montgomery College will work together to double the number of nursing graduates over five years. To help achieve this, goal Holy Cross has pledged funding to support college programs and students, clinical rotations at the Germantown hospital, and fully-funded staff to serve as faculty.
  • The partnership will help address the current severe shortages, especially of registered nurses.

Holy Cross Hospital is committed to improved access and has the record to prove it. We will:

  • Improve access to high quality hospital care.
  • Build upon our prenatal care access program, which has served 16,000 uninsured women since 2000, including 900 from the upcounty area during the last year alone.
  • Strengthen the safety net of health care for uninsured residents, including building a third health center in Wheaton/Aspen Hill to complement Holy Cross Hospital's existing centers in Silver Spring and Gaithersburg.
  • Improve health care quality, safety, and efficiency through informatics and care management.

Holy Cross Hospital offers a strong financial position to build and sustain a new hospital.

  • Holy Cross Hospital is a member of Trinity Health, which has a Moody's credit rating of Aa2 with Stable Outlook.
  • Holy Cross Hospital has achieved excellent financial performance compared to other hospitals in the state.
