A New Hospital for Montgomery County Meeting the Health Care Needs of the Community and Educating Tomorrow's Nurses
Holy Cross Hospital is establishing a new hospital in Germantown, Maryland, that will bring much-needed health care services to the most rapidly growing and aging region in Montgomery County.
This will be the first new hospital in the county in 35 years and the first in the nation on a community college campus with an educational partnership.
High-Quality Care to Meet the Needs of the Community
The hospital will be ideally located in Germantown, improving access to high-quality hospital care in an area that has, by far, the largest concentration of people without a hospital in the state.
The six-story, 237,000 square-foot hospital will bring much-needed health care services to the most rapidly growing and aging region of the county. The hospital will offer medical, surgical, obstetric, emergency and psychiatric care.
Here are some of the features of the new hospital:
- 93 beds
- All patient rooms will be private
- Sustainable design elements to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification
- A healing garden to facilitate quiet, contemplative moments for patients, visitors and clinicians.
An Innovative Education Partnership
As the anchor tenant of the Montgomery College Science and Technology Park, the new hospital will serve as a valuable educational resource for aspiring health care workers. Through an innovative partnership based on a shared commitment to education and the well-being of the community, Holy Cross Hospital and Montgomery College have committed to doubling the number of nursing graduates over five years to help address a shortage of nurses.
Holy Cross Hospital has committed to providing funding, clinical rotations for nursing and allied health students, instructional space and faculty. This expands the existing successful partnership between the hospital and the college. The opportunities afforded by this partnership will benefit the region socially and economically for generations to come and is likely to serve as a partnership model for other hospitals and community colleges in the nation.
Progress and Construction Updates
In June, the Maryland Board of Public Works - which includes the governor, the comptroller, and treasurer - voted unanimously to approve the land lease with Montgomery College to establish a new hospital on the Germantown campus.
On Dec. 8, 2011, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on the Germantown campus of Montgomery College to mark the beginning of construction for the new hospital. This will be the first hospital in the nation on a college campus with an educational partnership aimed to train more nurses and health care workers. More than 300 people witnessed the groundbreaking ceremony and honored guests included Maryland Senate President Thomas V. “Mike” Miller and other representatives of state and local government.
The new hospital facility is slated to open in 2014.
