Disease Prevention Education: Healthy Aging for Seniors
Aging is inevitable—but you can make healthy lifestyle choices to help you age well. Holy Cross Hospital’s chronic disease prevention programs and healthy living classes can arm you with information to keep your body limber and your mind sharp, and to help you prevent some of the common illnesses of aging.
Holy Cross Hospital Senior Source wellness education center, located in downtown Silver Spring, is the venue for many healthy aging programs. Our disease management classes can help you become an educated advocate for your own health, and exercise can help you improve your strength and flexibility and prevent injury. Better Bones—This free program for people ages 55 and older focuses on exercise to increase bone strength, as well as improve balance and flexibility, and enhance energy and well-being. We offer this program at Senior Source, as well as several community locations. View schedule and registration information.
Diabetes Education Program—This free 12-week classroom program is designed to help people who have pre-diabetes make lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and exercise, which can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes or cardiovascular disease. The program features information about nutrition for older adults, cooking demonstrations, free exercise classes, problem solving, and support to keep you motivated to continue to practice healthy habits. Memory Academy—Developed by the UCLA Center on Aging, this five-week course provides memory improvement techniques. This program is for anyone age 55 and older, but is not suited to people with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia. We offer this program at Senior Source and one community location. Senior Fit—Holy Cross Hospital’s award-winning senior fitness classes can help you get and stay healthy by increasing your flexibility, strength and muscle endurance through exercise. Certified instructors experienced in working with people age 55+ teach the weekly classes at 23 locations in our community. Senior Fit is perfect for people who exercise regularly, as well as beginners. View more information.
