Holy Cross Hospital offers a variety of programs to help its community members prevent and/or manage chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and arthritis. Below is a listing of many of the programs and classes that are available.
Better Bones (55+) This free program is designed for people ages 55 and older. It focuses on reducing the rate of bone loss, improving balance and flexibility, and enhancing energy and well-being. FREE. View schedule and registration information.
Blood Pressure Screening Free blood pressure screenings are offered on a walk-in basis at several community locations. View schedule at Community Health locations. View schedule at Senior Source.
Chronic Disease Self-Management Living Well Program This free six-week program teaches adults with chronic medical conditions how to manage their health in order to live longer and better lives. Anyone living with a long-term health condition, such as arthritis, diabetes, asthma or high blood pressure is welcome to attend. Family members, friends, and caregivers are also welcome. This program is made possible by funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and with funds granted through the Maryland Department of Aging by the Federal Administration on Aging. Diabetes Education Class Diabetes self-management classes, taught by a registered nurse and dietitian, prepare the participant to self-manage their disease in partnership with their physician. The class includes four group sessions and one individual visit with a dietitian. View schedule and registration information.
Diabetes Prevention Program This free 12-week classroom program is designed to help individuals who have pre-diabetes to make lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and exercise, which can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Nutrition guidance, cooking demonstrations, free exercise classes, problem solving, and support for maintaining motivation is provided. View schedule and registration information.
Memory Academy (55+) This 5-week course was created by UCLA Center on Aging and provides memory improvement techniques designed to work for everyone. (This program is not intended for people with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia). View schedule and registration information.
Nixing Nicotine This free six-week program is designed to help individuals stop smoking. The group is led by a certified tobacco treatment specialist, who provides a unique, supportive opportunity for each participant to learn to be, and stay, tobacco free with individual treatment plans. People With Arthritis Can Exercise (PACE) (55+) An exercise class for people with arthritis. Designed to improve range of motion and promote healthy joints. PACE is offered in English and Spanish.
Senior Fit (55+) Improve your overall fitness level safely and effectively. Weekly classes include cardiovascular endurance, strength training and flexibility exercises taught by certified instructors who have experience working with people age 55+.
